Silver Dollar City Review

Silver Dollar City (SDC) does NOT allow their regular guests to have GoPros on their rides even if properly secured. They do however, might allow you to film, but there is a long process one must go through before being allowed to use it. First you would need to contact the parks HR Department, Marketing, and or Guest Relations. This must be done several days in advance to allow them time to review your request and even then you aren't promised being allowed to film. I did receive an email from the park asking about how many viewers I had, social media accounts, blogs, etc. It seems to me that they only want large names to be allowed to film such as Theme Park Review, Coaster Nation, etc. The average guest wanting to film their friends and family on rides for their own personal use will most likely NOT be allowed to film. A regular patron isn't going to want to take the time to jump through so many hoops just to be able to film and that defeats the purpose of trying to make GoPros easily accessible to use while at the park.

SDC did seem to have a similar policy like Busch Gardens does when I spoke with a guest relations representative, but it's not something they make public. When a ride operator is trained, they are taught to look for hidden GoPros such as a hump underneath a shirt from someone using a chest harness. Also depending on the ride's restraint system determines what type of harness (chest, wrist, or hand) could be used.

I don't see SDC or any other parks changing their policy just yet and it may be several years before they do. As of now, the only way to get on ride filming is by using camera sunshades/glasses. Sunshades are very light and won't cause serious injury or harm if they fall off. I do hope one day GoPro will see the need to make a very small camera that would be under a certain weight that parks would allow. Right now the only camera I know of on the market that would meet that description is the Insta360 Go 2.

I would imagine another reason SDC doesn't want on ride filming is because of bad publicity. Because we live in a fallen and sinful world, people are going to be careless. Some may even be vulgar and if that's caught on film while riding then that could be a problem. Of the few people I talked with in the park, they seemed to like the idea of having GoPros allowed properly like Busch Gardens, but the powers that be aren't ready just yet. Hopefully, we will see a change in the future, but not anytime soon. As of now, I'm scratching SDC off my list until they become more camera friendly.
