King's Dominion Review

Updated: Jun 29, 2019

I went to King's Dominion for the first time last week and was honestly not very impressed with the park. They have a few good coasters, but that's about it. The food staff was average at best and took a very long time to serve guests even with a short line.

The ride staff was very good and kept the trains loading/unloading quickly, but they wouldn't allow GoPros, which are perfectly safe. On some rides, I was able to leave my chest harness on the ride deck, while others I wasn't allowed to. One ride staff member for Intimidatior 305, wouldn't even let me wear it without the camera, which made no sense at all. I had my hand mount on and she didn't say anything about that. I was told to get a locker and found out that there was no one time daily fee that you could move lockers to, like Busch Gardens. So, I decided to wear my chesty underneath my shirt, which solved the problem and saved me some money.

There was a metal detector at Twisted Timbers and that made no sense to me whatsoever! You basically went through the metal detector just like when you entered the park, were given a red piece of paper with guidelines (which I didn't read), and gave the paper back to the ride attendant when they were strapping everyone in. I had my GoPro with me in my pocket, along with my wallet, and cell phone, but no one asked me to put them in a locker or a pouch. I'm not exactly sure what King's Dominion was trying to accomplish with their metal detector, but it's basically useless and they just wasted money putting it in place.

One of the ride operators noticed I had my chest harness and said GoPros weren't allowed and I had to give it to him to hold while I was on the ride, however, he did not say anything about my hand strap. He mentioned that the park didn't allow GoPros, and I mentioned that they were perfectly safe and Busch Gardens allowed them. He agreed that they were safe and knew Busch Gardens allowed them, but mentioned that apparently someone took the screw out of the GoPro while on a ride a long time ago. He then saw that I had my camera glasses and said that he thought those were safe and should be allowed. It was funny though, how he asked me not to film with him in the shot so that he wouldn't be caught not enforcing the park's camera policy. None of the other ride operators even noticed or said anything about my glasses.

In conclusion, King's Dominion is an average park at best. They have one world record coaster coming in at 10th tallest in the world, Intimidatior 305, but that's about it. Premier Rides Flight of Fear and B&M's floorless Dominantor are also decent rides.
